Back in 2006 I was in talks with Chris Eccleshall to make me a version of Peter Hook's "Hot" bass, modded to my specifications. Chris was an affable, well-spoken man who took his time to sort the details with me. unfortunately, I was not in a position at that time to pay what Chris was (quite reasonably) asking. Regardless, it was great speaking with him, and the loss was all mine. For years following, I was in search of the "perfect" hollow-body bass, going through a couple of modded EB-2Ds, without success. In 2020, I again decided to contact Chris, this time ready to follow through with a purchase - It was then that I learned of his passing. Once again, I was without a decent hollow-body, now with no possibility of ever owning an Eccleshall. When this bass popped up on the Eastwood site, I couldn't believe my eyes - Furthermore, I jumped in on one of the last of the first 12 to bear Peter's signature and the limited edition booklet. When the bass arrived, it was absolutely ideal, minus the plastic nut - no problem! After a trip to my tech, I had a beautiful bone nut in place and a strum-ready low-action setup. This thing hits growl, bite, and thump. I am very impressed with the playability, quality and form-factor. The Active EQ however is NOT anywhere in the realm of a BB1200S (my main bass), but that in no way means it isn't good - Different tools for different jobs, one complimenting the other. The Viking has a nasally honk, whereas the BB1200S has a tight throatiness to it. Its not always about how the instrument sounds solo, rather sometimes it is it's performance in a dense mix that is the critical factor. This will give you your EB-2D sound, with more tension and articulation without the mud and flubbiness of a shorter scale hollowbody. All around, I give it 5-stars, at it is not worth the pettiness of considering the nut an issue... This is a great Eccleshall/Peter Hook pairing for under $1500, and it sounds like one. Nice work eastwood - Now we need a lefty Viking Bass VI (with me getting one of the first, limited ones for making the suggestion)! -Adam ("Adam-I-Echo").
