Once again, John Backlund has managed to create something that looks like it came from the 1950's, but from the future at the same time. These guitars will blow away your expectations for professional build quality and playability!
Rounding out the Backlund lineup is the Katalina - the only Backlund to feature three Custom Wound Lipstick Pickups. Retro-futuristic stylings abound, this one's sure to turn heads!
When you buy a Backlund, it's for the little boy inside who dreams of rocket ships and rock stardom. The designs are always spectacular (though in this case, I wish the checker board effect on the brushed metal from the original Katalina design had been retained). However, there is sometimes a (small) price to pay for the extravagant shape. The Katalina is great for standing up and playing, but there are issues when you want to play sitting down. The bulge in the lower body naturally should sit in your lap, but this is not easily done as the jack needs to plug in where your right leg presses against the body of the guitar. I have tried a few positions and some right-handed playing options are:
1. Play cross-legged (left over right)
2. Brace the guitar body between your right leg and right arm
3. Where the guitar strap and play sitting upright
I would also suggest using a dog-leg shaped jack rather than a straight one.
The thing is, this problem could have been avoided by having the jack socket on the front of the guitar.
Sound wise, while my guitar arrived with a fair amount of fret buzz on the lower end of the lower three strings, this was solved with a neck adjustment. The tone is bright and crisp with the kind of strat sounds you'd expect from a three single-coil pick-up set up. There is little bottom end on this, even on the neck pick up with the tone turned right down you get as far as a warm, softer feel. So for smooth, full-bodied jazz licks, you may want to use another guitar. If you want to play spikey rock chords and crystal-clear solos, though, this will do the business.
I wanted orange... but the band's colors are red and black. I think it worked out well. What? About the guitar? Oh yeah... The Katalina is a finely crafted instrument, with excellent quality and attention to detail. Its a very expressive guitar both sonically and physically. The set up from the factory was close to what I like so very little tweaking was necessary. The lipstick pickups chime or roar as needed. Position 2 and 4 provide nearly silent noise canceling. I'm really digging on the pickup selector placement, I thought it would be weird, but turns out I love it. I had been eyeing up all the Eastwood offerings for some time, but when my hero Todd Rundgren took the Backlund 100 on tour it really lit the fire. (With G.A.S.

Wow, what a GREAT experience this purchase was.
Firstly, I am a massive fan of John Backlund’s guitar designs. But aside from the design (please take it that these guitars play as great as they look) I am really commenting on the service and delivery.
Great communication, and delivery in 3 days FROM America to the uk. Amazing!
Thank you Michael, you are a star.

I have mot paid for my guitar in full just yet, due to it being on back order for quite some time.
It is ready to ship and things have came my way causing me to have to pay it in installments.
I just want to say thanks for working with me to get it paid off!
I cannot wait to get it shipped and play it.
Thanks again for being patient.

The guitars I ended up with are spectacular - Between the Duocata, Mondata Baritone an Hooky Bass 6 Pro I have three absolutely outstanding instruments - They are 'mine,' and they are 'home.' When I pick them up they give me the same thrill as some of my best vintage instruments ever did. And that's saying something for a guy who's been through ~130 guitars since 1975. I may do some pickup/harness swaps, but these are incredibly high quality, wonderful players.
I do miss the SG, and tried out...
